Well, a Tin Pan Alley melody--from an Irish tune, originally--distributed all over the US in sheet music form--the parlor piano, early 20th century, and maybe even a guitar--could be as far as Caddo County, Louisiana... We'll never know just where Leadbelly began with it, but the song--in all its mixtures and variables--certainly became his own. And thereby ours as well... And we bless him for it...
